Orthodontist in Durham Ontario -What Are Elastics for Braces?

May 13th, 2022

Elastics are an important part of treatment for many people with braces. They are used to treat misaligned teeth  including an overbite, underbite, open bite and crossbite. The elastic bands work by applying additional force to certain areas of the mouth to move the teeth into the desired position. Wearing elastics can reduce the treatment time for braces, so it’s important to understand how they work.

Two Kinds of Elastics

When it comes to braces, there are two kinds of elastics. The tiny little rings that sit around each bracket are applying pressure to the teeth to help move them into the desired position. You can choose to have a natural coloured elastic, or mix things up and choose different colours for these elastics. They’re changed at each appointment with your orthodontist, but you wear these elastics around the brackets for the duration of your braces treatment.

The elastics that sit between the top and bottom jaws are what most people think of when you mention elastics. Not everyone with braces needs these elastics as they are most often used to help with jaw alignment. There are various types of elastics to do different jobs.

Class 1 - Used to close gaps between teeth.

Class 2 - Used to pull the upper teeth back and move the lower teeth forward

Class 3 - Used to pull the lower teeth back and the upper teeth forward

The degree of force the elastic bands provide are measured in three categories - light, medium and heavy. The bands come in different sizes which is measured by the diameter of the bands, usually in fractions of an inch.

Length of Time Wearing Elastics

Some people will only need to wear elastics for several weeks because their teeth don’t need to move far and/or their teeth move quickly. For other patients with significant bite issues, they may need to wear the elastics for a year or more. For the fastest results, patients should wear the elastics almost all of the time. If you aren’t eating or brushing your teeth, you should wear elastics. Leaving the elastics off for long periods can mean you need to wear them for longer to achieve the same result.

Elastics aren’t just for people with braces. Elastics can be used for those people undergoing Invisalign treatment. Rather than hooks like you see on braces, the elastics attach to small buttons on the aligners.

FAQs for Wearing Elastic Bands With Braces

Below are some of the questions patients most often ask about elastic bands.

Will I need elastics?

Not everyone with braces needs elastics. Your orthodontist will prepare a treatment plan around the time your braces are fitted so you can ask then if elastics will be part of your treatment.

How do I put the elastics on?

Your orthodontist will show you where the tiny hooks are on your braces to attach the rubber bands. Hold the elastic between your thumb and finger and place the bands on the top and bottom of your teeth. Try not to stretch the elastic too much between your fingers. Stretching can reduce the strength and effectiveness of the band.

Like anything, elastics take a little practice to take on and off but you’ll get the hang of it within a few days.

Are elastic bands safe?

There are few side effects from wearing elastic bands. Tell your orthodontist if you have an allergy to latex as there are synthetic bands available. Remember to wash your hands before attaching or removing elastic bands on your teeth so you don’t introduce germs into your mouth. It doesn’t happen often but the rubber band may break while you’re wearing elastics. If this does happen, it doesn’t hurt much because the bands are so small and thin.

Will it be painful wearing elastic bands for the first time?

The elastic bands may cause a little discomfort when you first start wearing them. You can take an over the counter painkiller to reduce the discomfort of sore or aching teeth.

Will I get elastics as soon as my braces go on?

If you need to wear elastics they are usually added later in your treatment, not the same time as you have your braces fitted.

Do I need to wear the elastics all the time?

Your orthodontist will instruct you on how often you need to wear them but the majority of patients will wear elastics day and night. To ensure you achieve the fastest result, keep your elastics in unless you need to eat, brush and floss your teeth. Keep a packet of spare elastic bands with you wherever you go in case you need a new one.

Do I wear the same elastics all the time?

Elastic bands lose their effectiveness with time as they stretch. It’s best to use fresh elastics each time you take your elastics off to eat or brush your teeth.

If you have any queries about elastics or you expect to run out of elastics before your next appointment, call your orthodontist and let them know you’re running low on supplies.

If you have any questions about your elastics, call your orthodontist

Dr. John Nikolovski Discusses the different parts of Orthodontic Braces!

There are different parts of orthodontic appliances that help in treating your case to get a normal bite.  The list below can help to answer your questions below on how we get your smile nice and straight!

1) Orthodontic bracket:  An orthodontic bracket is the main part of braces that help your teeth become straight.  There are different types of orthodontic brackets including metal, clear ceramic braces and even self ligating braces.  These brackets are glued to your teeth and then removed when your braces are finished.  Also, we tie your colored elastics around these braces when you have your monthly orthodontic adjustments.
2) Orthodontic Spring: Springs are placed on the archwire and they can help push your teeth around to get a proper bite.
3) Orthodontic Hooks:  Orthodontic hooks are a part of certain orthodontic brackets and they aid in allowing you to hook elastics on to help slide teeth past one another.
4) Orthodontic Archwire: This is the wire that moves your teeth.  By changing different wire sizes and wire grades we can shift and slide your teeth past one another to align them into that perfect straight smile everyone desires.
5) Orthodontic Bands: These are placed on your last teeth to help act as a strong anchor of your braces.  By placing a strong band at the back, there is usually less breakage of appliances

Tips To Avoid Problems When Wearing Braces!

Although you may take extreme care of your braces, they can cause soreness to your mouth.  During the first month after placing your braces it is normal for your teeth to ache and for your jaw to be a little bit sore for the first few days.

Other common issues may be broken brackets, loose wires and bands which may cause temporary soreness around your lips and gums.  The following guide can help determining what is wrong and what you can do at home to help.

1) Loose Orthodontic bracket.  A loose orthodontic bracket occurs when a metal brace is broken and slides from side to side on the wire.   Apply a small amount of orthodontic wax to the bracket temporarily. This will help with any discomfort temporarily until you can come to your next appointment

2) Loose Bands: A loose band will stay in place until your next appointment although it will be a bit wiggly if you put force on it.  If brought to your Orthodontists attention they can fix it at your next appointment

3)  Poking wires: You can sometimes use the end of the eraser of a pencil to help put the wire into a more comfortable place, or if you are unable to move it you can apply some wax until your next appointment

Foods to Avoid

Some foods can also help or hurt you while you’re wearing braces. Remember to cut your food into small pieces that can be easily chewed. Some foods such as apples, pizza crust, hard candy bubble gum ice cubes should be avoided.

And always remember to brush and floss thoroughly when you are cleaning your appliances!

Dr. John Nikolovski your Brooklin Orthodontist Discusses Different types of bite problems

Your dental bite - or the way your teeth meet together can affect a number of different things, including speech, breathing or even the way your look.   Dental Malocclusions can also cause your teeth to wear down, chip or crowd over time.

There are a few main types of bite patterns including a crossbite, underbite or overbite.  Dr. John Nikolovski your Whitby Invisalign Orthodontist explains the difference between the three types of bites.

Crossbites

There are a few different crossbites  that are classified in different groups. First a posterior crossbite is a crossbite that occurs when the upper jaw is too narrow for the lower jaw.  The teeth on one or both sides are too narrow to fit with the lower teeth properly and this condition can cause wear of the teeth.
A second type of crossbite is when one or more on the top are stuck in behind of the bottom teeth.  This is called a localized anterior (front) crossbite

Underbites

An underbite occurs when the lower teeth are too far forward from the top teeth and these conditions can be caused by jaw growth anomalies.   Treatment for this type of problem can range from an straight forward 2 year comprehensive orthodontic treatment or a more complex treatment involving corrective jaw surgery.

Overbites (Overjet)

An overbite on the other had occurs when your lower jaw is too small for your upper in the front to back dimension of space.  A more correct dental term for this problem is called overjet.  Fortunately this problem can be treated with braces and functional appliances or surgery if the problem is very severe.

What should you do to keep your braces clean during treatment?

If you are undergoing orthodontic treatment at our Whitby Orthodontist office you may have a few questions about brushing and flossing during orthodontic treatment.  First, your durham orthodontist Dr. John Nikolovski says that increasing your brushing frequency can help with keeping your teeth and gums very healthy during treament.

Another good tip is to try your best to floss daily to remove any trapped food particles that may be stuck in between your teeth and gums.  With braces flossing is very important.  What Dr. John Nikolovski of Durham Orthodonticsrecommends is brushing at least once per day to ensure proper oral health care.  Your Brooklin Ontario Orthodontist always recommends to brush above and below your orthodontic archwire to ensure all plaque removal.

Proper brushing technique includes brushing both above and below your orthodontic braces and archwires.  The image below shows how you can accomplish this.  Make certain to brush both your front and back teeth to try to remove all plaque around your brackets

Another handy tool recommended by Ajax Orthodontist Dr. John Nikolovski is a proxy brush to get into those hard to reach areas under your orthodontic wire and around yourmetal or clear ceramic brackets.  We include a proxy brush with every oral hygiene kit after placing your braces on.

Finally, we always regular dental check ups and cleanings with your dental provider when undergoing treatment.

Brooklin Ontario Orthodontist discusses retainer wear!
Dr. John Nikolovski, your Whitby Ontario Orthodontist explains that when the  time for removing your braces arrives it can be both an exciting and confusing time as you are faced to choose between a fixed or removable retainer.   Knowing about each type of your retainer can help with some of the confusion.
Permanent Retainers
A permanent retainer is a small wire placed in behind your teeth for life.  Having a permanent retainer glued in can help reduce the chance of relapse, as the patient does not need to worry about wearing their retainer night time.

A permanent retainer can hold your teeth for a longer period of time  as teeth can shift naturally as we age.  One negative aspect to fixed retainers is home care and hygiene. Some patients find it more difficult to floss around a fixed retainer, but Dr. John Nikolovski, your Whitby Orthodontist can show you effective ways to floss fairly quickly with your permanent retainer.
Removable Retainers
Removable retainers on the other hand can be placed in at bedtime and removed in the morning when you begin your day.  Its great at holding your final result if it is worn properly.  Your Ajax Orthodontist Dr. Nikolovski warns however that a removable retainer can be forgotten at times, which can lead to relapse over a long period of time.
Brushing and flossing is much easier with a removable retainer as the retainer can be easily removed.  Removable retainers effective as long as they are used as they are directed.
One of the most important things to remember is that wearing your retianer as instructed is the most important thing after your braces are removed.

ALways remember the following rules with elastic wear.  First you won’t be able to open your mouth fully, so your elastics can be removed during meal time.  Other times, your Brooklin Orthodontist Dr. John Nikolovski may recommend your elastics to only be worn at night time when a small shifting is needed to correct your bite.  Always be careful with your rubber bands as they can snap if you open your mouth too wide!!
If elastics are not worn when asked, it can prolong treatment time and it may make it more difficult to get a good bite, so always do your best to wear them, to allow you to obtain that beautiful new smile.

Your Durham, Whitby, Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa Orthodontist Dr. Nikolovski Discusses Thumbsucking

May 27th, 2012

Many have asked us about thumbsucking...is it a problem?
At Durham Orthodontics concerned parents ask us about thumbsucking.  Your Whitby Orthodontist Dr. John Nikolovski explains that under some circumstances many children can suck their thumb up to the ages of 4 years old and not cause any damage to the oral cavity.
However if thumb-sucking continues to occur past the eruption of the permanent teeth, an anterior open bite can occur which may require early phase I orthodontic intervention, and cause problems with proper growth and development of the jaws.
If you are a worried parent, please schedule a complementary consultation at Durham Orthodontics and we can discuss treatment and early options for intervention.

More About Orthodontics from your Whitby Orthodontist Dr. John Nikolovski

May 26th, 2012

Whitby Orthodontist Dr. Nikolovski
What are the most common questions our patients have about Orthodontics? Your Whitby Orthodontist and Durham Orthodontist Dr. Nikolovski has all the answers.
At what age should I seek an initial orthodontic consultation?
The American and Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommend a full orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. Some orthodontic problems are easier to correct if detected at an earlier age, before jaw growth has stopped. Early or imperceptive orthodontic treatment can stop some orthodontic issues before they get worse.
What is Phase I and Phase II Orthodontics?
Orthodontics falls into two main categories. Phase I orthodontics also known as "early interceptive" orthodontics is a short limited phase of orthodontic treatment that usually occurs around the age of 7 to 10 years old, typically before all of the permanent teeth have erupted. This treatment is traditionally used to stop a problem from becoming more severe, and is commonly used to correct crossbites, underbites, or preventing harmful oral habits. Phase II orthodontic treatment typically involves a full two year treatment to align all of the adult teeth once they have erupted. Phase II orthodontics begins at around the age of 10 to 13.
Are Braces painful?
Placing orthodontic appliances on your teeth is not painful. Once your braces are placed and connected with an archwire, there may be a day or two of soreness afterwards. Typically after a period of a few weeks and once a patient is used to the appliances, there is not much discomfort.
Should I still go to my dentist for regular dental care?
Routine dental care is extremely important when wearing orthodontic appliances. Regular cleanings at 6 month intervals and cavity screening should be a priority when patients have their braces on as food and plaque can accumulate around the orthodontic appliances. Whitby has many skilled dentists in the area that can keep your teeth in excellent shape during treatment.
How long will I have to wear braces for?
The time a patient has orthodontic appliances on usually depends on the severity of their orthodontic problem. For a phase I treatment, typically the treatment is around 6-8 months. For a full phase II orthodontic treatment, appliances can remain in place for approximately 2 years or longer.
Do you have any more questions? Contact Durham Orthodontics and Whitby Orthodontist Dr. John Nikolovski can answer more questions by scheduling a complementary initial examination.

What do rubber bands do?

April 6th, 2012

Rubber bands, or elastics, can be an integral aspect of orthodontic care, so if Dr. John Nikolovsky has prescribed elastics as a part of your treatment, it’s important to follow the directions fully. Elastics help to align your bite or cause teeth to move in different directions and straighten more quickly. Dr. Nikolovsky will instruct you how to hook one end to an upper bracket and the other end to a lower bracket so the rubber band goes vertically or diagonally from one bracket to another. The tension of the rubber band produces pressure on the bracket, which causes the teeth to move and straighten. This tension is also sufficient to correct an overbite or an under bite in the jaw.
If rubber bands are a part of your treatment plan, there are a few things to keep in mind. With rubber bands, you won’t be able to open your mouth fully, so they will have to be removed when you eat and reapplied after meal time. Many times, rubber bands are only needed at night, so you won’t need to worry about eating with them. Also, if you try to open your mouth too wide, your rubber bands might snap – so be careful!
Failure to wear your elastics full time or as instructed can lengthen your treatment time and may make it more difficult to achieve an optimal result. But don’t worry; your time in elastics will be well worth it when you see your beautiful, new smile.

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month

February 9th, 2012

Each February for the past 62 years, the American Dental Association (ADA) has sponsored National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.
For kids wearing braces, brushing and flossing can become more difficult, requiring extra time and vigilance to remove food particles that accumulate on and between the teeth and in braces.  New options for braces such as Invisalign Teen, which is removable, make it easier for kids to maintain good oral health during orthodontic treatment.
If the health of your teeth is ignored during treatment with braces, the results can be significantly compromised. Dr. John Nikolovski is available and happy to explain why effective brushing and flossing is one of the most critical actions needed from patients during orthodontic treatment. Have you visited us lately? Give us a call and schedule an appointment!
